Veterinary Nutrition: Cancer, Supplements, & Probiotics (Part II)
Welcome back to Your Dog Wants You To Know This!
Have you ever heard that kibble causes cancer? Or that certain foods can treat cancer?
Dr. Jennifer Larsen is back for part II of this series to help us separate fact from fiction as far as nutrition and cancer are concerned.
Dr. Larsen is a Board-Certified Veterinary Clinical Nutritionist at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
Last week we covered general nutrition, and this week we’re covering diets for cancer patients, supplements, as well as pre and probiotics.
This is Part II of a two-part nutrition series, so if you haven't listened to last week's episode, I would love for you to do that after you finish this one.
As you probably know, the internet is quick to tell us that kibble causes cancer and that many canine diets can prevent cancer or help in cancer treatment. So the question is...is this true? That’s what we’re going to answer today.
In Today’s Episode We Discuss:
Whether there is any evidence that nutrition can prevent cancer
Why feeding your dog vegetables probably isn’t cancer-preventative.
The lack of evidence that a low-carb, high-protein diet can be used to treat cancer patients
The risks of ketogenic and raw diets in dogs
How to use the FDA website to find out if a brand of food has been recalled
Why jerky treats are not recommended for dogs
The lack of regulation for pet supplements
What prebiotics and probiotics are used for
Hopefully, this two-part podcast series has answered some of your questions about what to feed your dog. There is a whole lot of information out there, but Dr. Larsen did a fantastic job of walking us through the most important things to consider. Remember that every dog is different, so nutrition and supplement recommendations will look different from one dog to the next. There really isn’t a cure-all that will guarantee perfect health for every dog.
Don’t forget to go back and listen to last week’s episode if you haven’t already. There we answer even more questions about general nutrition for dogs.
