Welcome back to Your Dog Wants You To Know This!
Have you ever wondered why physical therapy is standard for people but not for dogs? Or what options are actually out there for dogs?
I’m joined by Dr. Denis Marcellin-Little to discuss why physical therapy is standard for people that have been injured and undergone surgery, but not yet standard in veterinary medicine, even though there are many dogs that could benefit from it.
Dr. Marcellin-Little has been a pioneer in his fields for decades, he is board certified in small animal surgery and sports medicine, and is currently a professor in orthopedic surgery at UC Davis.
Today on the podcast, we'll discuss physical therapy, the use of prosthetics and orthotics, and which dogs are the best candidates. Dr. Marcellin-Little has some really valuable insights into what care is appropriate for what dogs, and how it can actually be more of a challenge for us as owners than for our pets. He’s also sharing the latest in tech for the creation of prosthetics, including the development of 3D printing.
In Today’s Episode We Discuss:
- What physical therapy looks like for dogs
- Trying to make rehab cost-effective
- When you might want to be referred to a rehab specialist
- What qualifications a rehab specialist might have
- How prosthetics differ from orthotics
- Which types of dogs might benefit the most from prosthetics
- The process of making a prosthetic
- The progress of technology
- Tips for making sure a prosthetic works really well
- Seeking information and advice from professionals
It’s a pleasure to have Dr. Marcellin-Little on the podcast, and don’t forget that he is happy to answer your questions, so feel free to reach out to him if you are interested in his research.
It’s always amazing to learn about new research and technological developments in the veterinary field. There is so much that we can do for animals who are in pain. Like he said in the episode, we don’t have to write off amputees and other suffering animals as lost causes. More and more we gain the resources to help them, and so more and more we will.
